Her Story

Monica Reyes is a Southern Californian, born in San Diego, CA. Raised in Subic Bay, Philippines. Her and her family evacuated from the P.I. to the U.S. States from the cataclysmic 1991 eruption of Mt. Pinatubo, the second largest volcanic eruption of the 20th century. Her father, Robert Reyes (now a retired Master Chief in the Navy) was stationed  at one of the Navy ships and boarded Monica, her mother, and brothers to safety. Many families who survived, including her family were then taken to San Diego, Ca where they began a new start of their life. In 1994 her mother got re-married to a Marine who had a son her same age and a daughter two years her senior. The newly extended family then re-located to a Marine Military Base in Tustin, Ca. Majority of their childhood was spent there day dreaming and diving deep into each of the sibling's imagination by creating scripted plays and recording the magic on a family owned camcorder. In 2006,  Monica moved to Los Angeles, CA and began her career in the arts and fashion.

Childhood - Early Adulthood : She spent her childhood and adult life heavily involved in the arts, music, and theatre. She is a self taught artist and multi-instrumentalist who started learning how to play the piano at the early age of 8 by her mentor & church's Music Director.  She studied music theory during the summers at music camp, and ritually competed at the annual National Fine Arts Competition in Lancaster, CA , winning 1st PL. in a Piano Recital and 2nd PL. in Water Coloring in her earlier youth. This opened a door to a meditative and therapeutic path on her journey to self-discovery. Having learned the piano and continuing to play with all mediums in art has helped keep her grounded while navigating through the lessons and blessings of life.  She played major roles in theatre all through out  Jr. High and High school, but was mainly interested in the behind the scenes of set design and production layout more so than the actual performance. This then later set the tone and interest to pursue a creative endeavor to achieving a lifestyle and career in an art fluid form. Art installations, Art Shows, Prop & Set Design, and Wardrobe Styling would become the heart centric and evolution of her career in the arts and fashion. The question soon followed, how does one obtain that?

At 19, she moved out to Los Angeles, CA. One of her first odd jobs was to operate a vintage freight elevator at the Social House on Sunset Blvd, Hollywood where she then found amusement in drawing portraits of all the passer by's and riders. She then later shot portraits of muses in black and white on a borrowed digital point and shoot Leica. Those photos became an inspiration and lead her to her first solo art show of 24 x 18 black framed charcoal portrait series of women at Groundworks Coffee on Sunset Blvd and Cahuenga Blvd. during the winter of 2008. She attended and didn't tell anyone about the show until a week after the opening.

A friend of a friend later introduced her to a
